About FELIPE

Bachelor of Architecture (Honours) Master of Design Science Registered Architect NSW 8043 | VIC20496

Felipe Ayala established Spiral Architects Lab in 2011, following a 15-year career with some of Sydney’s leading architectural firms. During his years as Project Architect with Cox Richardson Architects, Felipe had the opportunity to collaborate on significant projects such as Sydney Metro Northwest stations design, master plans for private schools and international hospitality projects. Throughout his twenty years of professional practice, Felipe has been involved in the design documentation and procurement of a wide range of building types including commercial and residential buildings, health care projects and industrial developments.
Felipe’s passion for new timber technologies has taken the lab to be involved in projects for CLT construction, prefabricated timber cassettes and modular designs for dwellings and apartment buildings all of which will have a positive impact on the environment. His depth of industry knowledge has been fundamental in leading our relative young studio to win government competitions and substantial residential projects.

About ALEX

Bachelor of Architecture Master of Design Science

Alex Sarmiento joined Spiral Architects Lab in 2017 as a co-director to supercharge it’s growth. The company’s ambition was to rethink how medium-density residential functioned in Australia, and how the demands of commercial return and living standards might be balanced. He specialises in multi-residential and is an experienced manager of both people and projects, ensuring that all stakeholder inputs (client, council, consultants and residents) are harmonised to drive bestin-class outcomes. In the Lab and our wider built-environment community, Alex has become renowned for his attention to detail: deep diving into projects to ensure the most challenging design problems have resilient solutions. Alex is now looking to the future of modular and prefabrication to seek solutions to intergenerational living and greater social cohesion. He believes that as our urban spaces become denser we have the opportunity to reduce social fragmentation and drive better community support structures through the built environment.
